A November 17, 2015, article published on the online version of
The New York Times reported that the Justice Department has filed criminal and civil enforcement actions against 117 companies and individuals for the sale of tainted or misleading dietary supplements and workout products. At the center of the sweep, according to the article, is USPLabs, a Dallas based company that sells the popular workout supplements Jack3d and OxyElite Pro (
Makers of Nutritional Supplements Charged in Federal Sweep).
The indictment against USPLabs alleges that company executives sold formulations of Jack3d and OxyElite Pro containing the amphetamine-type stimulant dimethylamylamine (DMAA). This compound was not declared as an ingredient and its presence ran counter to USPLab's claim that their products contained only natural plant extracts. Use of the tainted workout supplements, the article says, played a role in the deaths of several people and caused extensive liver injury in others.
The Justice Department also filed complains against companies that sell supplements as cures for diseases. A high ranking member within the Justice Department commented that he hopes the attention this crackdown generates will make consumers aware of the serious health risks in using untested products.
