Nicotine Poisonings Prompt New E-Cigarette Regulations
A June 30, 2015, article published on the news site, Tech Times, reported that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may soon mandate health warnings and child-resistant packaging for liquid nicotine used in e-cigarettes and other kinds of tobacco products. According to the article, the FDA push to regulate liquid nicotine comes as a response to a spike in nicotine poisonings that have occurred throughout the US (FDA Cloud Hovers Over E-Cigarette Sales Following Uptick in Nicotine Poisoning Cases).

This proposed mandate runs parallel with an on-going effort by the FDA to add e-cigarettes and other liquid nicotine forms to its authority to regulate the sale and marketing of tobacco products, such as cigarettes and chewing tobacco. The main motivator for the FDA regulatory efforts is to limit e-cigarette use among youth. The article supports this claim by presenting data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showing e-cigarette use among US high school students has increased from 4.5 percent in 2013 to 13.4 percent in 2014.

Proponents of e-cigarettes contend that the devices are a safer alternative to tobacco smoking, because they claim e-cigarettes do not contain cancer-causing ingredients found in tobacco cigarettes. The FDA hopes to have its regulatory authority over e-cigarettes and other liquid nicotine products finalized this summer.
