Marketed and sold under the trade name Rozerem®, ramelteon is a newer sleep aid approved by the FDA for treatment of insomnia, particularly delayed sleep onset. The drug’s mode of action is unique for a sleep drug in that it does not bind to GABA receptors like the nonbenzodiazepines zolpidem, zopiclone, and zaleplon.
