Estriol is a metabolite of estradiol and the primary estrogen found in urine. Estriol levels in serum, plasma, or urine are measured by LC-MS/MS during pregnancy as part of maternal screens for Down-Syndrome-afflicted fetuses.

A precursor of estradiol, estrone is monitored in serum or plasma by LC-MS/MS or GC/MS to assess and diagnose developmental abnormalities, enzyme inactivity or deficiency, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or hormone replacement therapy in women.
