British Academics Provide Warnings on Athletes’ Use of Prescription Drugs
At a May, 2009, conference on drug-taking in sport, British academics cautioned
athletes against risking their lives by doping with powerful prescription drugs.
Professor Declan Naughton, Professor of Biomolecular Sciences at Kingston University
in South West London and Dr. Andrea Petroczi, a Reader in Public Health at Kingston
University, focused their warnings on the drug class known as nitrites, nitrite-related
drugs, and anti-inflammatory medications (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/05/090528092734.htm).
Nitrites provide many beneficial health effects, such as treatment for heart and
blood disorders. Future potential benefits of nitrites include treatment of arthritis
and other inflammatory diseases and several cancers where an improved blood supply
aids in delivering oxygen and medicines. Professor Naughton warned that sportsmen
and women could suffer a range of harmful side effects from nitrite misuse including
convulsion, cardiovascular collapse, coma, and death. He also mentioned that nitrite
is not currently present on any lists of substances banned by international sporting
authorities.
Based on her research in performance-enhancing drugs, Dr. Petroczi suggested the
possibility that nitrites could be used by athletes for doping purposes. Additional
research by Dr. Petroczi showed that tests for detecting Viagra-type medications
had almost doubled during the months leading up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics compared
to the previous two years. Dr. Pretroczi also highlighted two concerning issues
involving athletes and doping: a marked increase in the use of asthma medications
and the use of non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) well above the appropriate
levels for injuries or illness.
